"Exhausted And Still Expected To Keep Going!"

Author: Brenda McClure

Scripture: Mark 6:31 & Matthew 11:28-30

WOW! If this title wasn’t meant for me!

In Mark, the disciples were tired. They had been working non-stop. You know that feeling-work, family life, ball games, meetings, church, dinner with that friend that needs you, bible study, and oh ya, don’t forget self care! Jesus didn’t tell them to ’keep up the good work’. He told them, "Let’s rest. Come with me." Rest isn’t weakness, it is obedience. Even the great, all powerful God rested! Why can’t we? Why do we put more pressure on ourselves than even God expects from us?

In Matthew, Jesus again invites His disciples to rest. Not just physical rest, but spiritual and emotional rest. If Jesus told His 12 to rest, don’t you think he tells us the same?

  • We are allowed to step away.

  • We are invited to lay things down.

  • We were never meant to carry what only He can carry.

Sometimes we are exhausted from doing Kingdom work. Sometimes we are exhausted because we are carrying expectations that were never assigned to us. (Preaching to myself right there)

Jesus offers us two kinds of rest- a quiet place and a lighter load. Maybe today isn’t about quitting, it is about drawing closer to Him.

Prayer

Father, You see how tired I am. Not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. I want to rest, but the responsibilities and expectations are still there. When I wake up at 1:00 in the morning, let you be the first thought that comes to mind, and not my to-do list. Be my strength when I run out, my clarity when my mind is foggy, my patience when I have none. Renew me Lord. Give me rest. True rest that comes only in following You. Carry what I can not carry today. Carry me.  AMEN
