“God Is Near the Brokenhearted"

Author: Phyllis German

Scripture: Psalms 34:18 & Proverbs 18:21

The dictionary says brokenhearted means to be overwhelmed by grief or disappointment. Haven’t we all been there at some time in our life? Maybe it was the loss of a loved one or being rejected for a job or a relationship...whatever the circumstance it resulted in becoming brokenhearted. That may have brought about physical and emotional symptoms like chest pains, bodily tension, disruptive sleep, depression, anger, sadness...the list goes on and on. These are real and normal feelings! What can we do besides crawl into our shell and wait for it all to pass?

Doctors, counselors, and friends can definitely help but God’s Word says in Psalms 34:18, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Verse 19 goes on to say, “The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all...”

What that says to me is calling on the name ofthe LORD in the middle of my brokenheartedness is the answer to my wholeness!

Proverbs 18:21 says, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Therefore, the impact of our words can either act as a tool for healing and encouragement or a weapon that causes damage and discord. We need to be careful when giving advice to others about how Christians should deal with brokenhearted feelings. You will never go wrong sharing God’s Word and His promises. Focus on active listening, validating their emotions without trying to”fix” them. If you are the one in the middle of this brokenhearted time, don’t go through it alone...read His Word, seek help, reach out to a friend and be kind to yourself. Remember Prayer is the key to Heaven!

Prayer

Father God, remind me today that you are always with me and that I can trust you to heal my broken heart. I’m thankful that nothing catches you by surprise and that you will carry me through these days. I love you, Jesus! Amen
