"Grace Rewrites the Story"

Author: Jim Reynolds

Scripture: John 21: 15-17 & 2 Corinthians 5:17

Have you ever “messed up”? I mean something that damaged a relationship, broken a trust? We all have. Sometimes when we do, the person we hurt struggles to forgive us or trust us again and that is understandable. It takes time for us humans to repair a broken relationship.

You know the story of Peter. The leader of the 12 Apostles, Jesus’ closest disciple. You know how he would at times boldly blurt things out in defense of Jesus, even when Jesus said he would be arrested and be put to death, Peter said NEVER. When they came to arrest Jesus, Peter grabbed his sword, ready to fight to the death to protect Jesus. This same Peter just a short time later denied even knowing Jesus, 3 times and to multiple people. But our Jesus will always forgive, no matter what we have done if we will repent. Peter repented, he sobbed whenhe realized what he and done and I speculate prayed about it. He was truly remorseful.

After the resurrection, Jesus, at one of his appearances, shared his forgiveness with Peter, it is recorded in John 21: 15-17.

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John,do you truly love me more than these”. “Yes, Lord”, he said, “You know that I love you.” Jesus said “Feed my lambs”. Again, Jesus said “Simon, son of John, do you truly love me?” He answered “Yes Lord, you know that I love you”. Jesus said “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said “Lord you know all things; you know that I love you.””

Peter denied Him 3 times, Jesus showed his extent of forgiveness by showing forgiveness 3 times and then Jesus showed Peter how much; He trusted Peter by putting Him in charge to “Feed His Lambs”. If Peter was forgiven, your sins as well can be forgiven with repentance. I want to leave you with some words from Paul to sum things up. This comes from 2 Corinthians 5:17.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone and the new has come.”

Jesus our Lord and Savior had a purpose for Peter after he was reconciled to Him. Yes, you have failed, you have sinned but He will also forgive you and just like Peter, He has a purpose for you to fulfill. He needs you to also Feed His Sheep. How can you Feed His Sheep?
