"When God’s Will Feels Heavy"
Author: Pastor Christen
Scripture: Matthew 26:38 & Psalm 55:22
Have you ever walked through something that felt… heavy? Not just difficult. Not just inconvenient. But soul-level heavy. The kind of weight that sits on your chest. That follows you into every room. That keeps you up at night. Jesus understands that kind of weight.
In Matthew 26:38, He says:“My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death.”
That’s not light language. That’s deep sorrow. That’s overwhelming weight. And if Jesus felt that…then we shouldn’t be surprised when we do too.
I remember watching my mom carry a weight like that. It was a situation she never chose…but still had to live with. And I didn’t understand. I remember asking her why she didn’t just take matters into her own hands…why she didn’t just fix it… handle it… do something. And I’ll never forget her response: “I’m waiting on God to release me from this.” She waited for years. Years.
People questioned her. Some didn’t understand. Honestly… I didn’t fully understand either. And even now, I don’t know that she could explain why God allowed her to wait that long. But she stayed faithful.
I remember watching the toll it took on her—the weight of it even showing physically as she lost weight. It was heavy. And yet… she trusted. That kind of faith doesn’t always make sense from the outside. But here’s what I’ve learned: Sometimes God’s will isn’t just about what He does…it’s about what He forms in us while we wait. The waiting is not wasted. The weight is not pointless. Even when we don’t understand…God is still present.
Psalm 55:22 says:“Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you.”
Notice—it doesn’t say He’ll always remove it immediately. But it does promise this: He will sustain you in it. Jesus didn’t skip the weight of the cross—but He wasn’t alone in it. And neither are you. So if you’re carrying something heavy today…something you didn’t choose…something you don’t understand… You’re not abandoned. God sees you. God is with you. And He is working—even here.
Prayer
God, this feels heavy. And sometimes I don’t understand why You’re allowing it or how long it will last. But I choose to trust You. Help me to stay faithful in the waiting. Strengthen me when I feel weak, and remind me that I’m not alone. Carry what I cannot carry, and shape me in ways I cannot yet see. Amen.
