"Fighting Lies with Truth"

Scripture: Matthew 4:4 & John 8:31–32

How’s your diet going? You know, the diet that we all try to stay on. We have diets for food, health, social, spiritual…you name it, there’s a diet for it. On our food diets we try to stay away from wonderful things like pizza, tacos, donuts and Diet Coke. Health diets we try to add more exercise. Social diet we might defriend someone who isn’t good for our social health . Spiritual diet would definitely in my life include more time spent in studying the Bible.

Jesus says in Matthew 4:4, “ People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”

The Bible in this passage tells us that Jesus had fasted for many days so he would have been very hungry however He knew that His, and our need is really words from God to quench any need. Temptation that comes to us, and it will, always promises satisfaction. “ Yep, just this time and all my wants will be satisfied.” If you live in my world you know that’s just not true. Temptation tries to distract you from what God has for you. Temptation comes so easily when our emotions are at their peak and so we start believing the lies of temptation. Jesus says, “ Remember every word that comes from the mouth of God” to give us strength to overcome when temptations are present. We can’t trust our emotions but can trust Gods word.

Jesus tells us in John 8:31-32 “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

How about it? You want to be free? Tired of all the “diets” trying to be satisfied? Well there’s your answer right there. Gods word. Nothing else will protect you from temptations. Read it. Hear it. Remember it. Use it.

Lord you are worthy of praise for your loving kindness to us. Help us to remember your word when temptations come our way in Jesus name. Amen.
