40 Days of Prayer - Day 5

God’s Ways are Higher Than Our Ways

Author: Erech Pierson

Isaiah 55:8-9 – “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And myways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher thanthe earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than yourthoughts.”

Romans 11:33 – “Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! Howimpossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!”

Deuteronomy 29:29-“The Lord our God has secrets known to no one. We are notaccountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions.”

Not long ago, my wife and I set out to take our 2 dogs for a walk on one of those beautiful ,sunny March days. We were heading down the block to walk around the walking path at thelocal grade school. Down the block, across the parking lot and just as we turned the corner at thefence to get on the path, we noticed another couple, with their much smaller dogs, walking alongthe same path ahead of us. Knowing that our larger dogs would be excited to see new friendsand want to play, and that this excited energy can sometimes be misinterpreted, we thought itbest to go the other way.

As we started to go across the field to another part of the path, our dogspulled against their leashes causing some discomfort and resistance on both theirs and our parts. After all, they knew where they were going and they knew they quickest way to get there, whywould they even consider going a different way?

While this is a bit of a silly illustration, how often do we find ourselves pulling against thedirection that God is leading us? After all, we know where we are going and we know thequickest way to get there, right? Sometimes God’s way is trying to keep us away from the dangerahead. Other times God’s way is trying to take us to an opportunity that He has for us. And stillother times God’s way is to simply try to keep us on the path when the world seems to be brokenand falling apart around us.

There is an old hymn, written in 1787 titled, How Firm a Foundation, that says “When throughfiery trials thy pathway lie, My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply”. Over 230 years later,Chandler Moore and Naomi Raine released a praise song titled, Christ is My Firm Foundation. One of the versus says, “I’ve still got joy in chaos, I’ve got peace that makes no sense”. May you know today, that the “rock” of Jesus Christ is still just as solid as He has always been. OurFoundation is just as firm today, as the day it was laid. And when your world seems to becrumbling and life makes no sense, God is the only thing that does.

Prayer:

Father God, sometimes this fallen world seems upside down and inside out and it can be hard toknow which way is up. May we be reminded today, that we don’t have to have it all figured out,we don’t have to have all the answers, and we don’t have to know every next step. We simplyneed to follow and trust in the One that does.
