Ash Wednesday
“Marked, Not Finished”
Author: Pastor Christen
Scripture: Joel 2:12–13 & Genesis 3:19
Ash Wednesday begins with a mark. A cross traced in ashes. A quiet reminder whispered over our lives:
“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Genesis 3:19
It is not a glamorous beginning. It is not triumphant. It is honest. Ashes remind us that we are human. Fragile. Finite. We get tired. We fail. We sin. We cannot save ourselves. No amount of striving, pretending, or polishing fixes what is broken deep inside. The ashes tell the truth: we are dust. But that is not the whole truth. Because the same God who formed Adam from dust is the God who breathes life into dust. The same God who reminds us of our mortality is the God who invites us into mercy. Through the prophet Joel, God says:
“Return to me with all your heart… Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead. Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate.” Joel 2:12–13
Ash Wednesday is not about shame. It is about return. It is not about public display. It is about inward surrender. It is not about being finished. It is about beginning again. The ashes mark us, but they do not define us. They remind us that we are in need and that grace is available. They call us back to humility, back to dependence, back to the Father who is “merciful and compassionate.” As we begin Lent, we remember who we are: dust formed by God. And we remember whose we are: beloved children invited home. The mark on our forehead is temporary. The mercy of God is not. Lent begins here not with perfection, but with honesty. Not with performance, but with surrender. Not with despair, but with hope. You are marked. But you are not finished.
Prayer
Merciful Father, today we remember that we are dust. We confess our weakness, our pride, our self-sufficiency. We acknowledge the places where we have drifted, hardened our hearts, or tried to do life without You.
Yet we thank You that the ashes are not the end of the story. You are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in unfailing love. As we begin this season of Lent, draw us back to You. Tear our hearts open to Your truth. Create in us humility. Grow in us repentance. Fill us with hope.
Mark us not just with ashes, but with grace. Remind us not only of our frailty, but of Your faithfulness. Lead us back to You fully, honestly, and wholeheartedly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
